What is a Shipping Container Code?
A Shipping Container Code, a 14-digit barcode placed on the outside of your shipping carton or pallet, allows your retailer to scan your shipment of multiple units of your product as it comes into their warehouse.

Used in most retail situations, a Shipping Container Code may also be referred to as an SCC-14, GTIN-14, ITF-14, or Master Carton Code.

How are Barcodes for Shipping Containers different?
The SCC-14 is used to CHECK IN your shipments of multiple units of your product at the retailer’s warehouse. The UPC barcode is a 12-digit unique code for your product that allows retailers to CHECK OUT your individual units of product at the register.

Let’s consider the example of the Snickers® candy bar as an example:

This image shows the UPC code printed on the individual unit of the candy. This image shows the SCC-14 code printed on the shipping container in which the manufacturer ships multiple units of the candy bars to the retailer.

Do I really need a Shipping Container Code?
Yes, the common method by which your retailer scans your product shipments into inventory is the SCC-14 or Shipping Container Code.

How do Barcodes for Shipping Containers work?
Shipping Container Codes (also known as SCC-14) appear as lines (bars) of varying widths representing the series of numbers commonly shown below the bars.

Barcode scanners read the bars and convert them back to the 14-digit Shipping Container Code that they represent.

When you reach an agreement with a retailer to carry your product(s), they request the information required by their unique proprietary sales and inventory tracking systems.

Your 14-digit Shipping Container Code when scanned identifies the container of goods with your company.

How do you create my Shipping Container Code from my UPC code?
To calculate the SCC-14 number from a UPC-A number, first drop the last check digit. Add 0 at the beginning to make a 12-digit number (the digit 0 is the implicit country code for US and Canada). Add the package indicator at the beginning to make up 13 digits. Calculate the check digit based on this 13-digit number and append it to the end. The result is an SCC-14.

What if I have multiple items with different UPC codes within one box?
Let’s assume that you pack 10 units of item A and 10 units of item B into a master carton. This is referred to as a Mixed Shipping Container. Often this comes in the form of a mixed carton or mixed palette. Mixed shipping containers are a special case. They require a specific starting digit (called a package level indicator) and require their own unique base UPC code. You MAY NOT use the UPC from an actual item inside of the box as the base for the shipping container code for a mixed shipping container. If you are unclear about this requirement, please call us at +1-404-885-6066 for further explanation.
